The Faculty of Nursing organized a comprehensive health awareness convoy at Gamasa Basic Education School as part of the community and developmental role undertaken by Mansoura National University, and in line with its mission to promote child health and foster health awareness from early childhood stages. The initiative was held under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Sherif Khater, President of the University; the leadership of Prof. Dr. Raefa Allam, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing; and the coordination of Prof. Dr. Sherine El-Tahery, Community Service and Environmental Development Coordinator at the Faculty.
The convoy aimed to support the school health system, reinforce preventive concepts, and cultivate positive health behaviors among students across different age groups. This was achieved through an integrated package of educational programs and practical applications implemented by faculty members, teaching assistants, and students—reflecting the integration of academic and community service dimensions within the Faculty’s mission.
At the preschool level (kindergarten), a comprehensive program entitled “Towards an Aware, Happy, and Safe Child” was implemented by Associate Professor Dr. Ghada Badawy, Assistant Professor of Pediatric Nursing, in collaboration with students enrolled in the Pediatric Nursing course. The program focused on promoting children’s healthy physical, psychological, and social development and building a well-balanced personality from an early age. It addressed anti-bullying awareness by introducing the concept in a simplified manner, reinforcing values of respect, cooperation, and acceptance of others, and enhancing self-confidence.
Kindergarten activities also included awareness sessions on personal hygiene and the establishment of daily healthy habits to prevent infectious diseases, as well as fostering responsibility and independence among children. An oral and dental health awareness program was delivered, covering the importance of proper dental care, correct brushing techniques, and prevention of dental caries. Additionally, a simplified first aid program for children was conducted to develop safe response skills for minor injuries, reduce fear during emergency situations, and promote a culture of safety and risk prevention both inside and outside the school.
At the primary school level, the convoy provided specialized awareness programs on first aid and fracture management, delivered by Associate Professor Dr. Rasha Hassan, Assistant Professor of Medical-Surgical Nursing, with the participation of Dr. Yara Adel. These sessions focused on raising students’ awareness of basic first aid principles, appropriate responses to injuries, preventing complications resulting from incorrect interventions, and promoting initiative and responsibility.
The convoy also included a comprehensive program on healthy nutrition and its role in supporting children’s physical and cognitive development. The program introduced essential nutrients and their functions in body building and immune enhancement, distinguished between healthy and unhealthy dietary habits, emphasized the importance of balanced meals, and encouraged reducing fast food, sugary beverages, and sweets. Proper nutrition was linked to academic performance and overall health. Students were also reminded of daily healthy habits such as regular meal patterns, adequate water intake, physical activity, and sufficient sleep.
Furthermore, the activities included awareness sessions on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), delivered by Dr. Sara Hegazy, highlighting its life-saving importance and the essential steps for rapid intervention in emergencies. Dr. Hossam Farahat provided training on choking and airway obstruction management, focusing on risk recognition and correct immediate response to reduce complications.
At the preparatory stage, an awareness program on adolescence and puberty was presented by Dr. Heba Zeidan, Lecturer in Maternity and Women’s Health Nursing. The session addressed the physical and psychological changes associated with this stage, corrected common misconceptions, promoted positive health behaviors, and supported students’ psychological and social adjustment.
Prof. Dr. Raefa Allam emphasized that organizing this convoy aligns with Mansoura National University’s strategy to activate its societal role, integrate education with practical application, and strengthen partnerships with educational institutions. The initiative contributes to preparing health-aware generations capable of adopting healthy lifestyles and supporting the development of a safer and healthier school environment.
